Dead Heat by Joel Rosenberg

I admit to not being much of an end times fan. For no particular reasons other than the whole time period seems way too open to conjecture, and off in the distant future. I guess it all seemed disconnected to my reality. I mean, sure, I believe Jesus Christ will come again and there will be an ushering in known as “end times,” I’ve just never felt that understanding or thinking about it related to my life or faith walk.
Then I read New York Times best-selling author Joel Rosenberg’s most recent book, Dead Heat. And that’s all changed.
By a copy Online @ christiansupplyland.com

If you’re already familiar with his work, then perhaps you’ve read Rosenberg’s previous four in this high stakes, political drama series; The Last Jihad, The Last Days, The Ezekiel Option and The Copper Scroll. Oddly, in his previous novels, as he cast end time scenes in fiction (based on the book of Ezekiel) he wrote what would become real headline news in the future, i.e. after his books hit the shelves.
Call it uncanny, lucky, or prophetic. Whatever the case, if the same holds true for Dead Heat, the world as we know it is about to change, dramatically.

For starters, the book opens with what I before considered an impossibility, or at the very least, highly unlikely. America is nuked.
In Dead Heat, nuclear warheads are launched from container ships perched in nearby waters, not far from our eastern and western coasts. With well-planned, synchronized hits, the enemy takes out Washington D.C., Langley, New York City, and the part of California where and when the Republicans happen to be holding their caucus and the President will make an appearance.

Perhaps most startling is how the terrifying scenario appears entirely plausible. In fact, I’m glad I live in the Midwest. Not that the results of such an attack wouldn’t impact the entire nation. The devastation would spread far beyond the millions of lives lost. In a nutshell, the reverberating results of these limited range warheads would throw the nation into abject chaos.
Consider, as Rosenberg aptly describes, our major banking system would be all but wiped out with Wall Street and our major financial institutions headquartered in New York City. As for Washington, all government buildings and the accompanying personnel would cease to exist. Not to mention the destruction of FBI headquarters. And that’s just the beginning!
Of course a superpower would not likely launch nuclear attacks when the result would be an immediate response from the United States – leaving both countries devastated. So the mystery to solve in order to silence the deafening scream for swift retaliation begins with, who did it?
Rosenberg’s knowledge of the United States Government, foreign policy, international politics, the Middle East, all combined with insight into the nature of man, makes for an intelligent and emotionally gripping read. The use of real historical events and current political tensions escorts readers to what feels like an achievable but undesirable future.
Throughout the compelling read, Rosenberg proves that crazed dictators still exist and will make wild decisions, but operating behind the scenes hide unexpected alliances bent on power and domination. Reading this book next to today’s news headlines raised my consciousness of why politicians are so concerned with Russia, Asia, and every country in the Middle East.
Aside from the political arena, the story contains Christians bent on sharing the gospel up to the very end. Although I admit to initial dissatisfaction with the core character’s dialogue, like when the President of the United States contacts Jon Bennet by satellite phone in the remote refugee camp in northern Jordan where he and his wife volunteer and have been essentially “hiding out” from politics.

Before deferring to the President and listening to the intent of the call, our hero witnesses. Not likely, I thought. Then I remembered I was reading fiction, an easily forgotten reality when under the spell of Rosenberg’s expert weaving of our potential future world.
A moment later, conviction landed. Perhaps that type of believer does exist. Moreover, maybe I should become one of them. I believe, to a large degree, that’s one of the reasons that Biblical text found in Revelation, Daniel, and Ezekiel, as well as Jesus’ warnings so succinctly describe the coming end.
Surely their inclusion in scripture of what’s ahead would compel believers to sound the warning bell for those who don’t yet know Jesus. And, if we grasp the impending doom and resulting damnation for others, how could we gloat?
Dead Heat has also compelled me to change by paying attention to the political environment in which we’re ensconced.
If you’re looking for a “snuggle up by the fire” comforting book, don’t read Joel Rosenberg’s Dead Heat. On the other hand, if you’re interested in an impacting, action-packed challenge, then you’ll want to pick this one up.

Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers

Review by April McKinnon

Redeeming Love” by Francine Rivers, a more modern telling of the book of Hosea, tells the story of a woman who was born to a single mother as a result of her affair with a married man. At seven years of age Sarah had already learned just how harsh and cruel this world can be. Her father did not want her and her mother, fighting poverty, resorted to prostitution to make ends meet. When Sarah is eight years old, her mother dies, leaving Sarah in the care of her “Uncle Rab” who sells her into prostitution.
Fast forward to age 18. Angel, Sarah’s new name, is living in Pair-A-Dice, California. She has experienced several failed attempts to escape prostitution but has now landed herself in the employ of the Duchess and her bodyguard/enforcer, Magowan. Having been in this profession for 10 years, Angel has become hardened and exhausted. She wishes that she could just end her life, but lacks the courage to do so.
Enter Michael Hosea. One day, during one of Angel’s daily walks, Michael Hosea is selling his produce to the local store and happens to catch a glimpse of this beautiful woman. Immediately he hears in his heart, “This one, beloved.” Knowing that the Lord has spoken, Michael begins asking the merchant questions only to find out that Angel is a prostitute. Surely he has misunderstood the Lord. After a lot of soul searching, Michael Hosea knows that he has heard the Lord and that Angel is to be his bride. Using all the gold he has earned selling his produce, Michael spends several nights trying to talk to Angel and woo her to no avail. Finally frustrated and angry that nothing is working, Michael heads home. For days the Lord will not leave him alone about Angel and Michael fears that something is terribly wrong. Once back in town to sell more produce, Michael finds out that Angel has been beaten almost to death. That night he convinces Angel to marry him and takes her home to nurse her back to health.
During her recovery and for months after, Angel does all she can to push Michael away. He’s getting to close and if she lets him in she’ll fall apart completely. Michael continues to try to plow through her defenses. Though by no means perfect, Michael desperately wants her to see how much he loves her and wants her to be whole and free. Each time Angel runs away, he brings her back. Each time she pushes, he tries desperately to show her love instead of anger. Overall he’s tender and patient and accepting and begins to slowly work to climb the walls in Angel’s heart. But just when Angel’s heart begins to soften, she begins to feel unworthiness and fear and she continues to run. When she is finally able to let go and heal, it is because she finally feels the love of the One who will never let her go no matter what she does. Then, and only then, does she finally accept the love of her husband and is able to let him in completely; once again becoming Sarah, wife to Michael Hosea.
I have to say that the first time I read this story; I was completely overwhelmed by the images of how much God truly loves us in the words and ways of Michael Hosea towards Angel. In preparation for this review, I read the book again. I can still identify with Angel so much. No, not in how her life has played out or what she chose to do to try to survive, but in her feelings and emotions and thought processes. I too have felt, and still sometimes do, that I am unworthy and afraid; that I am not doing anyone any good. I have felt the desire to be loved by someone as deeply and fully as Michael loves Angel. I have also felt that desire with God and, though I know from Scripture that He does love me this way, it is hard to reconcile that to life when you’ve never felt that on earth. But all through this book, I saw nothing but God…His love for us, His grace, His mercy…Nothing but God!
There are some sentences in this book that immediately stand out to me. I hope these touch your heart as much as they have and continue to touch mine.
“Michael caught hold of her. “I’m right here.” He felt her shaking and drew her into his arms. “I’m not going to leave you in darkness.” He tipped her face up and kissed her gently. “When are you going to understand I love you.?””
This line reminded me so much of what God says to us sometimes…”When are you going to understand I love you?” He sits patiently and wonders when we will finally get it. When we will finally see that He loves us, no matter what we do or what we say, He loves us.
“Look, mister, if you knew even half of what I’ve done, you’d have me headed back to Pair-A-Dice so fast-“
“Try me. Go ahead and see if it makes a difference.”
Do you hear God in that? Go ahead, tell me all your dark, dirty secrets and see if I care. See if it makes me feel any less about you. See if I love you any less or want to cast you out. Go ahead try me. The answer of course is that it won’t make one bit of a difference, but wow, what a picture.
If you haven’t read Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, you are missing out on a great picture of who God is.

Footsteps of St. Peter by Mac McConnell

Terry Delaney

Summary

This particular book, Footsteps of St. Peter: The Early Years, takes a look at the apostle Simon Peter before his encounter with Jesus Christ. You will learn what life was like on the Sea of Galilee as the young boy, Simon, grows up wanting to be like his dad–a fisherman of great respect.

After a tragic accident, Simon is forced to grow up quicker than he imagined. Along the way, you will get a feel for how Simon Peter’s fiery personality was forged. He does become a master fisherman and ship builder but soon realizes there might be more to this life than fishing.

Review

When I was asked to read this book and possible write a blurb for the back of the book, I was both excited and skeptical. I told Mac, the author, that I was not much for historic fiction especially when it comes to matters of the Bible. Far too many writers, in the name of “art” have maligned the message of the gospel in order to sell books. At any rate, I agreed to read the book.

I am no longer skeptical of Mac’s writing. While Footsteps of St. Peter is historic fiction, there is absolutely nothing negates what we do know about Peter from the Bible. If anything, through Mac’s masterful telling of a story, we find that Simon Peter was a real human being just like you and me. He had his struggles early in life in relying on self and trying to please his fellow man (Don’t we all?), but we know from our reading of the Bible that Jesus Christ did save the man from himself and even used him to advance the kingdom in mighty and miraculous ways.

I was impressed with how he drew from a 1st century Palestinian culture and adapted it with a touch of 21st century life. His vivid word pictures bring the region where Christ walked to life in our mind’s eye.

Recommendation

I am hooked on Mac’s ministry. His books, what we are primarily concerned with here at Christian Book Notes, are an excellent way in which we can meditate on our need for Christ. His ability to tell the story of Peter before he met Christ offered great insight into the grace and mercy Jesus showed in calling Peter as an apostle and forgiving him of his sins.

You would do well to purchase Footsteps of St. Peter as well as his Cradle to Cross Trilogy (I will be posting reviews on these books as well). You will want to give these books as gifts to your friends–trust me. Buy a copy at christiansupplyland.com

The Armageddon Strain By Sharon Gilbert

This is the second book tying in to Sharon and Derek Gilbert's "Mytharc" fictional universe, and the first in a series called Countdown. Unlike Winds of Evil, however, this one works very well as a standalone novel. The Armageddon Strain ties in peripherally with Winds of Evil, in as much as places and characters are mentioned in both titles, but they're not necessarily important. In other words, it's a neat thing for readers of both titles, but nothing that would cause trouble for a first-time reader.

In The Armageddon Strain, Dr. Maggie Hilliard Taylor is dealing with a variety of problems. Her divorce finalization is approaching, but her ex seems to be having second thoughts. At the same time, two intriguing men enter her life, each with his own motives, perhaps related to the major issue: Maggie's father, a genetic scientist, has just passed away unexpectedly.

Conspiracy buffs are quick to point out that Maggie's father is the latest in a long string of dead geneticists. Initially skeptical of any connection, Maggie's thoughts slowly change as more mysterious events follow. Meanwhile, an avian flu epidemic has exploded across the country and is showing signs of jumping species. What will the government do to stop it?

Yes, it's a conspiracy. A big one, involving shadowy government cabals and demonic influences. Fans of the X-Files or L.A. Marzulli's Nephilim series will probably love this. For everyone else, it's a decent enough thriller, though perhaps a bit too fantastical.

On the other hand, the threat of biological warfare is real and scary. (I found it interesting that I read this right after reading Brevig Mission Plague, also dealing with that subject.) The concept of implanted microchips is also a growing trend, leading to both intriguing ideas and dangerous privacy concerns. But The Armageddon Strain takes that a step further, combining the two in a truly frightening manner.

Outside of Maggie, the characters are rather sparsely developed, but that's not the focus in a book like this. The spiritual content is focused more on the evil side and the concept of building toward the End Times. Christian characters do appear, and are open about their beliefs, but it's very matter-of-fact. Mildly Recommended.

(The Armageddon Strain was originally published independently, so if you find it with a different cover than what it shown above, it's still the same book.) Buy this and other great christian fiction at Christian Supply Land

Bible Buying Guide

Have you ever attempted to buy a bible, either for yourself or as a gift, and got overwhelmed by the choices and versions and got just plain stuck on the question, which one do I buy? Which one is best for beginners? Which one is best for teens? Which one is easiest to understand? This blog will attempt to answer these questions, and help you decide for yourself wich bible is the best fit. You need to understand, all bibles DO NOT say the same thing. Aside from religious doctorines, the main difference in bible version or tranlations was the method that was used during translation, and the text in which that was based upon. Some versions leave out complete verses. Most differ in wording because the wording was altered when translating from hebrew or aramaic into english. This all causes much debate among scholars as to wich is closest to the original texts, therfore the most truthful.  Let start with the infamous King James version. If you have ever opened up to graze over a few pages of this particular bible you will noitce right away the unigue phrasing. A lot of old english thee and thou going on. This is a pretty difficult read for me. Beautiful and poetic, and the orginal manuscript translated into the english language, but not an easy, flowing read. A lot of concordance and dictionary refferance was needed for me to comprehend it. Not my personal favorite, but the book of choice to most protestant pastors and ministers. The New King James version changed the phrasing and lost the ye and thee's and more closley resembles the New International Version or NIV. For a history on the King James Bible please visit http://www.av1611.org/kjv/kjvhist.html. To purchase a copy of the King James bible at a terrific price, please visit Christian Supply Land. We have a tromendeous selection.
